Dr. Nave Graham is the Instructor of Flute at the University of Mississippi. She leads a versatile and fulfilling career as an educator, solo performer, and chamber musician. Dr. Graham has been awarded first prize in numerous national competitions including the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia Young Artist Competition, the Flute Society of Kentucky Young Artist Competition, and the Central Ohio Flute Association Young Artist Competition. She has also been a prizewinner in the Byron Hester Solo Flute Competition hosted by the Houston Flute Club, the South Carolina Flute Society Young Artist Competition, the National Flute Association Masterclass Performers Competition, and the Donald Peck International Flute Competition.
As an advocate of contemporary music, Dr. Graham has attended various festivals dedicated to new music including the Toronto Creative Music Lab, New Music on the Point, and the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy. She was also a fellow at the Bang on A Can Summer Music Festival at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Dr. Graham is also a founding member of All of the Above, a contemporary chamber music sextet devoted to creating unique and innovative musical experiences by collaborating with composers and challenging the traditions of the classical concert. All of the Above has held residencies at Xavier University as well as the Cortona Sessions for New Music. All of the Above made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2017 and returned in October 2018. Dr. Graham has also performed with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra Augusta, National Music Festival Orchestra, and the National Repertory Orchestra.
In addition to performing, Dr. Graham is instructor of flute at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in the summers. She previously held the position of Adjunct Instructor of Flute at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio and served as adjunct flute faculty at the CCM Preparatory Department. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she studied with Randolph Bowman. She also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of South Carolina where she studied with Jennifer Parker-Harley.
Additionally, Dr. Graham earned a doctoral cognate in Ethnomusicology. Her research includes Music Performance Anxiety and mental health in the modern music school as it relates to Eastern philosophy and psychology. She has presented lectures at the College Music Society Conference, the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina Flute Society Festival, Northern Kentucky University, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. She is also a certified Mindfulness instructor and specializes in integrating concepts of meditation, acceptance, and self-compassion in music curriculum. In addition, Dr. Graham is the co-author of repertory database, Flute Music by Black Composers—an ongoing effort to research and promote the works of underrepresented composers. This database has been adapted by the National Flute Association as well as the Institute for Composer Diversity.
